Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler maker Ather Energy is now accepting pre-orders from Chennai consumers for its flagship Ather 450 scooter.
Ather, which was first launched in Chennai in 2013, had its commercial launch in June 2018 in Bengaluru, and Chennai is its second market.
Ather has its battery and vehicle manufacturing facility in Bengaluru currently and sells vehicles only through their own experience centres, without using dealership network.
Ather offered early access test rides to electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts in Chennai over the weekend and showcased Ather 450 prior to its official launch.
Ather said the vehicle was already sold out till November in Chennai having opened to pre-orders. The company is now opening pre-orders for its second limited batch of deliveries.
In a sign of endorsement by its user community, 50 owners of the scooter from Bengaluru also travelled to Chennai to share their ownership journey.
The company will be open its experience centre, Ather Space at Wallace Garden in Nungambakkam on July 24, and consumers can test ride vehicles and get a perspective on EV usage.
“After the successful launch in Bengaluru, we are excited to enter Chennai, where Ather was born. We now believe that Chennai will be a bigger market than Bengaluru for us,” Tarun Mehta, Co-founder & CEO, Ather Energy, said.
Mehta added that in a first for the two-wheeler industry, Ather is also experimenting with new forms of ownership like lease and are launching the mode of purchase in Chennai.
Ather has also begun installation of its Ather Grid charging points in Chennai since May and installed ten fast charging points since then. Forum Vijaya Mall, offices like AtWorks, and other cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores are a few such locations with charging facilities.
The company has also announced free Ather One subscription for deliveries in 2019. The Ather One plan offers customers free access to public and home charging; regular maintenance, breakdown assistance, and other services at Rs. 700 + GST monthly.
The Ather 450 claims a “top speed” of 80 km/hour, a range of 75 km, and an acceleration of 0-40 km/hr in the scooter category of 3.9 seconds.
The on-road price of the Ather 450 is Rs 131,683 in Chennai. The price includes two helmets, along with the FAME 2 subsidy, and other basic costs like insurance, road tax, GST, and other fees.
This price is expected to go down once the budget proposal of reduction in GST from 12% to 5% for EVs kicks in.
