The trailer of upcoming Kannada film Katha Sangama was unveiled on Monday. It is an anthology film, which borrows its name from the 1976 anthology film directed by legendary filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal. And, the makers of the new film open the trailer remembering the great director.
Puttanna Kanagal’s Katha Sangama was based on three short stories. And the anthology also had then a little-known actor called Rajinikanth playing a lead role in one of the three short films. The upcoming Katha Sangama is made up of as many as seven short films. Like Puttanna Kanagal’s film, the makers of this anthology seem to have drawn their screenplays from short stories. Sample this: we see a glimpse of a story of a barber, who is giving a shave to a high-ranking cop. And, he seems to be faced with the difficult choice of killing the cop. It calls to mind author Hernando Téllez’s short story, Just Lather, That’s All. The short story follows the inner struggle of a highly reputed barber. He has to make a difficult choice between killing Captain Torres, aka his enemy, or giving him just a perfect shave upholding his reputation as the “best barber in town.”
The trailer also boasts of naturalistic performances by a few non-professional actors. The visuals of a lady crying for help on the phone is quite moving. The film also features a slew of talented actors, including Kishore, Hariprriya, Prakash Belawadi and Yagna Shetty among others.
Judging by the trailer, like the barber of Just Lather, That’s All, the connecting theme seems to be – man vs himself. The characters seem to be subjected to a moral crisis and pushed to cross the bounds of humanity. The question is will these characters emerge on the other side alive with their humanity intact?
Produced by Rishab Shetty, H.K Prakash and Pradeep N.R, the anthology of seven films is directed by seven new directors: Kiranraj K, Chandrajith Belliappa, Shashi Kumar P, Rahul PK, Sumanth Bhat, Karan Ananth and Jayashankar A. The makers are yet to announce the release date of the film.
