‘Ishq’ starring Shane Nigam and Shine Tom Chacko in the lead roles got released earlier this year and won widespread critical acclaim. The film also fared pretty well at the box office. Upon its release in legal streaming platform Amazon Prime, several non-Malayali cinephiles were impressed by the film and applauded the makers. Directed by debutant Anuraj Manohar and scripted by Ratheesh Ravi, ‘Ishq’ dealt with moral policing on a superficial level, but it also exposed the hypocrisy and misogyny prevalent in the society today.
Since ‘Ishq’ has an universal subject, the film is now getting remade in all major Indian languages. In Tamil, the makers have signed Kathir to reprise’s Shane’s character. The director’s name or other details are not yet known. Kathir, well known for his excellent performance in ‘Pariyerum Perumal’, looks like an ideal choice to replace Shane.
‘Ishq’ will also be remade in Hindi. Neeraj Pandey, the director of acclaimed films like ‘Special 26’ and ‘A Wednesday’, will be involved in the production side. More details are awaited.
