June 28 marks the 11th death anniversary of a remarkably gifted scriptwriter and eminent director and producer of Malayalam cinema— A.K Lohithadas.
Starting off his career with ‘Thaniyavarthanam’ and bidding adieu with ‘Nivedyam’, the filmmaker was a part of shaping the Malayalam cinema.
The void left by the demise of Lohithadas is still felt by fans as he was one of the most passionate and talented scenarists and filmmakers that Malayalam cinema ever had. The visionary filmmaker started off his career in cinema as a scenarist. He marked his debut with scripting for Sibi Malayil's directorial 'Thaniyavarthanam', released in 1987.
The movie created a row as the characters he moulded were so raw and real. Later, he went on to scripting for many prominent filmmakers of the time like Sathyan Anthikkad, I.V Sasi and many others.
In 1997, he made his maiden directorial venture 'Bhoothakannadi starring Mammootty. Later, he directed many movies including 'Kanmadham', 'Soothradharan', 'Chakram' among others.
'Nivedyam' marks his last movie.
Mohanlal’s character in 'Kireedom', 'Sethumadhavan', was brilliantly sketched by Lohithadas.
In a career spanning over two decades, his films have won a National Film Award, 6 Kerala State Film Awards, and 14 Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Script.
He died on 29 June 2009 due to a heart attack.
