The mortal remains of legendary poet O.N.V Kurup were cremated with full state honours at Shanthikavadam electric crematorium in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.
As a mark of respect, a group of artists paid a musical offering to the poet before the funeral.
Thousands of people from various walks of life paid homage to O.N.V, who died at a private hospital here in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday following cardiac arrest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice-resident Rahul Gandhi condoled the death of the 84-year-old poet, one of the most loved and celebrated contemporary poets of Malayalam.
A Left sympathiser, Kurup took part in various environmental movements, including the Silent Valley agitation. He had won national award for the best lyricist for the movie ‘Vaishali’ and Kerala State Awards for over 10 times in the category.
