Thrissur, May 3, 2014: The Thrissur Pooram festivities began on Saturday with the ceremonial ‘Kodiyettam’ (hoisting of the festival flag) at the quadrangles of 10 participating temples, including ‘Thiruvambady’ and ‘Paramekkavu’, to officially mark the beginning of the ‘Pooram’ that falls on May 9.
The flag hoisting ceremony at the Thiruvambady Temple was held between 11.30 am and 12 pm, while the flag hoisting at the Parammekkavu Temple was held between 11.58 am and 12.10 pm.
There will be special festival programmes in all the participating temples in connection with the festival for the remaining days, till the ‘Pooram’ day.
The preparations for the ‘Pooram’ are also in full swing at various places with the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi Devaswoms, the main participants of the week-long festival who vie with each other to make the festival grander and more colourful, starting their preparation for the renowned Thrissur Pooram at least a month ago as the artisans belong to both Devaswoms have been giving final touches to the elephant accoutrements.
The preparations for the sample firework display to be held on May 7 are also progressing. The festival is also one of the major tourist attractions in the state.
