Bitter Gourd Fry Recipe With Coconut


  • Karela (bitter gourd)- 6 (cut in thin round circles)
  • Chana dal- 1tbsp
  • Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
  • Mustard seeds- ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves- 7-8
  • Dry red chillies- 3
  • Garlic cloves- 5
  • Coconut- ½ cup (grated)
  • Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  • Red chilli powder- 1tsp
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Oil- for deep frying
  • Oil- 2tbsp


1.Marinate the sliced bitter gourd pieces with salt and turmeric powder for about 10-15 minutes. Keep it aside.After that squeeze the juice out of the bitter gourd with your hands and keep it aside.

2.Heat the oil for deep frying and fry the bitter gourd slices in it for 4-5 minutes on medium flame, till they turn brown and become crispy.

3.Transfer the fried bitter gourd pieces to a plate and keep it aside.Grind the coconut, garlic cloves and red chilli powder together in a mixer into fine powder.

4.Then heat two tablespoons of oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds, chana dal, mustard seeds, dry red chillies, curry leaves one by one. Fry for a minute.

5.Add the powdered coconut mixture to the pan and cook for another 3-4 minutes.Now add the deep fried bitter gourd pieces to the pan and mix well.

6.Add salt and fry for a few seconds.Once done, switch off the flame and serve.
