Thaha Fasal surrenders before NIA court in UAPA case

Kochi: Thaha Fasal has surrendered before the NIA court in Kochi in the Pantheerankavu UAPA case.

The Kerala High Court on Monday had cancelled the bail granted to Thaha in the case. The court had ordered Thaha to surrender immediately.

The action was taken based on the appeal filed by NIA demanding the cancellation of bail granted to both Alan and Thaha. NIA argued that the accused were granted bail without taking into account the evidence against them. The division bench including Justices A. Hariprasad and K. Harilal considered the Central government’s argument that the trial court examined the evidence but did not give it the required importance.

The court however has not cancelled the bail granted to Alan Shuhaib, who was also arrested along with Thaha in November 2019.

The High Court said that it was not interfering with the bail granting to Alan at the moment, considering his young age and also different degree of involvement.

The High Court has also given a direction to the NIA court to complete the trial within one year.

The court has also set aside the finding of the trial court that no prima facie case was made out against the accused.
