K. Surendran was appointed president of the BJPs’ Kerala unit. A declaration to this effect was made by the party’s national president J.P Nadda in New Delhi.
49-year-old Surendran becomes the youngest person to be appointed to the state president’s post.
Surendran’s appointment to the top post comes after a gap of three months. His predecessor P.S Sreedharan Pillai had quit the post after he was appointed Governor of Mizoram.
Surendran, who is currently the general secretary of the party, was the clear front-runner to the top post ever since it fell vacant. The RSS, which was initially opposed to his elevation to the top post when his name figured earlier, is understood to have thrown its weight behind him.
Surendran also enjoys the firm backing of Union Minister V. Muraleedharan.
